Key West: Ruled by Roosters

We took an early morning flight so by 1:00 pm, we had checked in at the bed and breakfast we were staying at and I had a drink in my hand ready to find some conch fritters. Although our time on Key West was going to be short, I was determined to take in as much of the culture (aka food) as I possibly could. Below are my top 3 picks for eats and as a bonus, dessert of course.

1. The Conch Shack – Conch are medium to large sea snails (I know it sounds gross but it’s really good). It can be prepared many different ways depending on the country. Key West likes to fry them in batter and serve them hot. The Conch Shack is literally just that, a shack. You sit outside to eat them at the small tables provided. As I took my first bite dipped in key lime aioli, I knew I had made the right choice for my first meal in Key West. After I snarfed down my first fritter, I realized I was surrounded by roosters. Loud roosters. It’s quirky and most definitely Key West.

2. Key West Pretzel Company – I’m not a big fan of soft pretzels but my husband is, so because I love him so much, I was willing to sacrifice for him. I was intrigued by the key lime mustard, so I gave it a try. YUM. Best soft pretzel ever. Plus they are huge! And I haven’t seen a rooster in a few minutes…

3. El Siboney – I have had my share of Mexican food, but I have never had the opportunity to try Cuban food…in a Cuban neighborhood. I highly recommend the Roast Pork plate. Served with yellow rice and plantains, the pork will absolutely melt in your mouth. Try the conch chowder too. You knew I was going to find another way to sneak in some conch, right? Are those roosters following me?

4. Better Than Sex Dessert Restaurant – Yes, you read that right. Dim lighting sets the mood as soon as you step through the door. You are given a flash light to read the menus. Daily specials are called “one night stand.” With desserts like cookie nookie and jungle fever, it’s hard to choose. You can add a drink with your order like The Sex Appeal, or a beer called Mandy’s Man Candy. If you think the roosters stick to the main drag, you are dead wrong…

There are plenty of places to choose from, but if you are ever in Key West, I recommend these places. I’m not going to tell you how many slices of key lime pie were consumed either. Okay, it’s official. I’m over the roosters.
