The Only Rueben For Me

I never tried a Rueben sandwich when I was a kid. My first experience with one was a few years back in Hannibal, Missouri. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, it was the boyhood home of Mark Twain. This is where he based his story of Tom Sawyer and gang. I enjoyed the history of the town after consuming my first Rueben. Ever since then, if I go to a restaurant that serves a Rueben, I have to try it. Usually good and always messy, I can’t believe I have missed out on this tasty sandwich for so many years. I admit, it’s the sauerkraut that always made me think twice. I never thought I would find one so perfect that I would be ruined from all others that stand in its shadows. Who would have thought that in a locally owned coffee shop in downtown Olathe, Kansas I would have met the only Rueben for me. Kansas Coffee Cafe serves traditional and handcrafted coffee drinks as well as a variety of sandwiches and pastries. But, back to the Rueben… It’s the perfect combination of sauerkraut mixed together with Thousand Island Dressing on top of corned beef with melted Swiss cheese all piled on lightly toasted marble rye bread. I had extra napkins at the ready, but as it turned out, I didn’t need them. I could hardly believe it! A Rueben that is not greasy!!! For the sake of research, I went back a few days later to try it again. Mainly because it’s all I could think about (I know, I’m pathetic). You will be happy to know that the second one was just as good as the first. Owners Chris and Crystal Grohs worked hard finding the right combination, and they have delivered a superb Rueben. Seriously, I think I’m in love with this sandwich…

I'm drooling just thinking about it
