5 Travel Necessities

Are you are an avid traveler or an occasional one? It doesn’t matter how often you travel, everyone has travel necessities that we need in order to bring the comfort of home with us. It might be your favorite shampoo and conditioner, or maybe it’s an article of clothing. I’ve always thought guys have it so much easier than us ladies. A bar of soap, deodorant and clothes and they are good to go.

I used to (maybe I still do) pack an insane amount of toiletries and clothes. Why? I guess I thought I needed these things. Turns out, I don’t need half of the crap I always insisted on bringing. I now know that I can live without my eye cream, foot lotion and electric toothbrush for a few days.

SOLID SHAMPOO BAR

If you have never heard of a solid shampoo, you are missing out. I get mine from Lush. My husband and I both use this shampoo. I have even used it for shaving and for washing my face in a pinch. With no chemicals or preservatives, this is a great choice. And best of all, no leaking in your luggage!

MAKEUP

I use this makeup every day, not just when I travel. With its powder formula for the foundation, blush, eye makeup and even bronzer, this is a no brainer for me. Again, no leaking in your luggage. It has a SPF 15 and is so natural, you can sleep in it. I would not recommend doing that because c’mon, that’s just plain lazy. Which brings me to the next item…

FACE WIPES

Find one that works for you and go with it. I prefer to use one that removes eye makeup as well. And once more, no leaking in your luggage. Are you starting to see a pattern here? This also means the 3 ounce limit doesn’t apply and you don’t have to pull these items out separately at the security checkpoint. It’s a win-win!

A SCARF

I am obsessed with scarves. With so many uses, it’s a must for your travel necessities. They are easy to pack and lightweight so there is no excuse not to bring one… or 4. With a variety of styles and sizes, I would recommend bringing a small one and a large one. The smaller one can be used to jazz up your outfit and make it look completely different to go from daytime to nighttime. However, you will get the most use out of a larger scarf. The brand that I love the most is Theodora & Callum. I will warn you, these are not cheap. But with endless uses, it just makes sense.

I will name just a few uses, but check out their website for their “How to Wear” videos and pictures. At the start of your trip, use the scarf as blanket on those chilly planes (you don’t won’t to use the airline blanket – trust me). Pool or Beach side, use it as a sarong. When you are ready to move from the pool or beach to go grab a bite to eat, convert it to a halter dress or a one shoulder dress (both super cute). At dinner, wear it as a long skirt. Going to a holy site? Cover up your head and shoulders and you are good to go. These are hand wash and line dry so you can easily wash and dry these in your hotel room.

SHOES

Duh, right? Of course you need shoes. The problem is packing too many because we think we need a pair for every outfit, right? WRONG. Shoes can add a lot of extra weight and take up too much space in your luggage. The solution? Tieks ballet flats. Want to explore a city, but don’t want to look like a tourist with your bulky tennis shoes? Don’t want to bring a pair of high heels for dinner? Want something that can fold up to about the size of a small camera bag (unless you wear a size 13, then you are on your own). Check, check and check.

These come in a variety of colors from neutral to bright and everything in between. Your only problem is that you won’t be able to pick just one color. These flats are unlike any other pair of flats you have ever worn. They are 100% hand stitched Italian leather and are made just for you as soon as you order them. These are also not cheap, but I am a big believer in getting what you pay for. I asked for a pair for my birthday so there are ways to get your hands on a pair (hint, hint).
