I was raised on meat and potatoes. Normal meat, like beef. So when I decided to order the yak burger at The Grubsteak in Estes Park, Colorado I thought I might be leaving the table hungry. I mean, there’s got to be a McDonald’s around here, right? Hmm, on second thought, that might not be beef either… For those of you who don’t know what yak is (don’t worry, I had to look it up too), it is a shaggy long haired ox.

I was ok with that part, but the recommended cooking on a yak burger is medium rare to medium. I’m a medium well girl, so when I ordered as recommended, my husband suggested that I might be a little sick when my burger came out with a little more red than I like. I chose the Boulder burger which was topped with cream cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and garlic. The consensus at the table was favorable (unless they were just trying to make me feel better about my choice). With the combination of the cream cheese topping, the burger was moist and tender. It had a very similar taste to beef.

I would recommend trying the yak burger to anyone wanting to try something a little different. They also serve elk, beefalo (55% buffalo, 45% beef), turkey and veggie burgers with a variety of toppings such as guacamole and Monterey Jack cheese, Cajun spiced with bleu cheese, and of course, the classic bacon cheddar. The Grubsteak also serves steaks and sandwiches. They also cook up a mean Rocky Mountain Trout for the fish lovers out there. So if you are in the mood for some wild game, or just want to try something different, give The Grubsteak a try.

  1. The Yak didn’t make you yak! Seems like a winner to me! But seriously, my husband and I eat game meats all the time. They are traditionally healthier for you because they are grass-fed as opposed to farm-raised. Once you put the cream cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and garlic on top, it might lose some of its health benefits LOL but I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up at that if it showed up on my plate!

  2. Good write-up! I’m familiar with Estes Park; we used to live in Granby! Beautiful country!
